The Variable

Another good episode (even if it was chock full of more annoying children). Faraday's relation to Eloise and Widmore are confirmed (making him Penny's half brother, at least). Jack and Sawyer are back to there feudin', though Sawyer isn't quite as big of a dick about it any more. I kind of miss that. It seemd they're building up to "the accident", where Chang will lose his arm and probably lead to some Dharma folks leaving the Island (including, as Biz said, lil' Miles). It's getting tougher and tougher to figure out who's "good" and "bad", Eloise Hawking sent her son back to the Island, knowing she would kill him. The question of whether or not you can change the past to affect the future is still a bit up in the air. At this point, I'm leaning towards no, though I've read some good arguments otherwise. What do you all think? And of course, we lost our dear Faraday. Will it be for good? I think so. I'm not saying we won't see more of him...but I think he did indeed die as a result of getting shot. Any thoughts on that?

RIP Faraday, RIP.

How do we know Richard's not going to "save" Faraday like he did little Ben? (whoa, that totally made me flash back to the "Problem Child" movies)

Now I'm wondering - and this is only a vague sort of thought - that Richard does save Faraday using the Temple, and Faraday becomes Jacob.

I'm still holding onto my Jack is Jacob theory, but it's an outside possibility. He is the offspring of two island people.

I'm fairly confident Faraday will be back. Shooting doesn't seem to kill characters on lost anymore. Plus Farady's bag is changing your destiny, so it would make sense if he changed his. I like MJ's idea that he becomes Jacob, plausible indeed.

nope, Faraday is dead.

Guns don't kill people - guns kill Lost characters.

chiggedy check this:

Especially this part:
“It was an incredibly painful thing to kill this beloved character," Cuse adds, "but we feel that’s what this show has to do. His death is kind of the culminating event in the entire season. It really ends one chapter and commences the start of the final chapter of the entire series. Once we explained that to Jeremy, while he was personally saddened that his full-time status on Lost was coming to an end, he put the story above his own personal self.” (Hmmm...notice Cuse's wording: "full-time status".)

I always hand a fondness for Faraday, but that contrived, semi-choked up, melodramatic little speech he gave to Baby Charlotte makes me miss him less.

Did he change jumpsuits in jeep, while Miles was careening through the jungle? I think he got in the jeep in sleek black, but arrived in drab gray... I wonder if he told Miles to hide his eyes.

that TV Guide article was good - I like how they called telling him they're killing off his character an "exit interview".

and that Jeremy Davis carried a boombox around with him wherever he went.

also, the Entertainment Weekly guy has some good theories this week - including the best idea for the season finale.

He thinks the cliffhanger will be a "who changed time" sort of thing.

Why do you think Eloise sent Faraday back when she knew she was going to kill him? What did she think he'll do? Does she think he can change time?

We shoulda put her and widmore in the parenting poll.

After watching this episode, I really didn't know what to do with myself, so I drank. I really loved Faraday. I can't believe he's gone.

With that said, didn't anyone else notice that in the preview for next week, Jack and Sayid go swimming in the temple. That looks pretty rad.

And with the way the Dharma folk torture Sawyer along with all the Empire references this season, I'm really hoping the cliffhanger this year is Sawyer getting frozen in carbonite.

I totally just remembered that terrible accent the young Charlotte had.

And I was just reminded of how she said "I'm not allowed to eat chocolate before dinner" which also happen to be her last words.

Eloise sent him back to the island because she believes that whatever happened, will happen - nothing can change the past. The universe will course correct. Even if she didn't send him back to get shot by her younger self, it would have happened anyway, in Ellie's philosophy. She believes in pure determinism and fate, not free will.

Basically: she sent him to the island to die because that's what she was "supposed to do".

Perhaps Daniel going back and getting shot was the only way that Elloise herself could have left the island, so she knew she had to do it because she is a selfish bitch?

So, I saw Wolverine this weekend, I won't let you in on the numerous parts of it that I felt were lame, but just wanted to mention that there are a couple of former Lost actors who play minor parts in it. And not Miles. I thought it was funny.

I think Faraday getting killed is a firm rebuke by the creators of lost to any idea that you can change the past.

I'm caught up on lost!

Let's have another poll. I missed the parenting one.
