Questions & Answers: La Fleur

First of all, I want to say that I love that this photo was labeled "Love After Love" by whoever labeled it.

Okay! I have to say, I think this has been my favorite episode of the season. I was trying to think of why that might be and I came to the conclusion that it was all on-island. We all needed to go back, right?

We all got a good glimpse of that statue. I even saw it again this morning on Heckasac. What the hell is it? I know you have some theories going in the comments - I've never seen Stargate, so I don't know what you're talking about.

1974! What a great year! We all have to part our hair straight down the center! How long will we stay here? How can this end, if the record has stopped and we're stuck on the wrong song?

Some more questions:

1) How are people having babies on the Island? When does this change?

2) Did Sawyer and Juliette move into her old place?

3) Why doesn't Richard age? Is he always, ahem, constant? What about his people, the Others/Hostiles - those guys who Sawyer and Juliette killed looked like they were from the 70s and before Richard was hanging out with the army people. Do the others age, but Richard doesn't?

4) How did Dharma establish itself on the Island? How did they establish a truce with the Others? What does that entail?

5) Does the baby that was born grow up to be someone significant?

6) How did smiller feel that the two stoner Dharma guys, with their special brownies, were named Phil & Jerry?

This blog is gonna get real boring, since there's no episode next week... but in TWO WEEKS we'll get to see how we're gonna integrate our survivors in with our new BFFs in Dharma.

This reminds me of Angela from the office. Need another one with cats playing musical instruments, though.

Am I the only one who damn near shit himself when we saw the rest of the statue?

For real! That thing was totally Egyptian!

New theory:

The Hostiles have a Stargate. That's why there are so many Egyptian references.

And I don't care what Blogger's spell check tells me. Stargate is most definitely a word.

Also, while I think it was kind of cool and funny that Sawyer and Juliet hooked up, their onscreen chemistry seemed a little off to me. But I don't want to turn into one of those OrangePeelMouth resident haters, so I'm going to say something else positive about the episode. Jin speaking good English is awesome!!

It is most likely Anubis:

It could be Horus, only because that is another Egyptian Deity that carries an Ankh, and it rhymes with "Horace" which would sorta fit. Anubis fits the previous pieces better, though: He's the guardian of the Underworld, like Abaddon, and he is closely associated with Cerberus, which is (apparently) what the smoke monster is called (the smoke monster being associated with Abaddon).

So Anubis fits really well.

I love how the Lost writers always subvert what we think is going to happen, or at least give it a little twist. Like we all knew Juliette and Sawyer, but we all thought we would see the initial humping (in a cage, presumably), and instead they just skip to them being in a settled relationship for years.

What about the eyeliner line? The best. Loved it! Of course, I'm happy with any Sawyer episode, especially one in which he sniffs a daisy.

I think I almost bought Sawyer's paisley shirt in 1988 at Target.

Good episode - though I don't have as many questions as I've had after the last few. It was more of a "moving the story along" episode. The statue of course ruled.

Definitely stoked on the Jerry & Phil shout-out!

"Also, while I think it was kind of cool and funny that Sawyer and Juliet hooked up, their onscreen chemistry seemed a little off to me."

As many times as I've watched Titanic and Sleepless in Seattle, the fact of the matter is love and relationships are so much more influenced by circumstance than cosmic fate. I realize we are in the lost world here, but they seem to brush up against the real idea of love that we all deal with everyday in our lives.

That said, I agree that I don't see the chemestry either! Sawyer is the bad boy. Juilette likes bad boys? I don't know.

My mind is still being blown by the statue.

The real question is, what does Dan barnes think about this episode?

I think what Charles is saying is "if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with"

This was a great episode, but it brought up so many questions: In season 3, little Ben runs into Richard Alpert in the jungle. Alpert has long 70s hair and kinda kippy clothes in that scene. In last night's 1974 scene, Alpert has short "modern" hair and clothing. WTF? That Alpert guy is blowing my mind worse than 4-toed Anubis!

Also, what happened to Horace's first wife? In season 3, when Ben is prematurely born and his dad carries tiny Ben and his dying mother out to the road, they are picked up by a short-haired Horace and his cute blonde wife. Later on the island, the blonde wife is a Dharma elementary school teacher. Where did she go and how did Horace end up with Emily? And why is he such a lousy drunk?

I really hope we get to see young Ben in one of these episodes.

Holy hell OPM you are the greatest! Combing Stargate and LOST in one post! What a dream. The statue is probably not Anubis as he has jackyl ears, a staff and no head gear. The statues has a square 'crown' and no staff but rather a chord or snake ( they interchangeable symbolically ), possibly Bes god of good luck?

I really liked this episode. It was great and tied a few things together. Can't really explain why, but it was good. New questions, of course. When will we see a front shot of the statue??

Charles Albright said...

Tunisia and Egypt are semi-close. Think about it.

Charles

p.s. Actually Tunisia is close to that whole region known as "the cradle of civilization". Did lost start human history? Just wait till we all find out that lost really isn't a TV show. That's the most ultimate lost esq thing that will ever happen.

So, if the Losties are all members of Dharma, and Ben and Co. gas and purge the Dharma initiative, does ben kill the crash survivors in the late 70s/early 80s?

grassy knoll: please see my theory in the post "Questions & Answers: 316" on this very blog.

In short, I like to pretend that's what happens.

Bernard & Rose = Adam & Eve. You heard it here first. Actually you didn't since I get all my LOST theories from the internet.

The statue is Lapidus. Think about it: the same shaggy hairdo, the same jackyl ears, the same "staff" (or so I've heard). All the pieces fit. And let's not forget that Jeff Fahey played the lead in "The Lawnmower Man", about a simple man who attains godlike powers.

Case closed.

I loved this episode too! It made me feel bad for Juliette though. I started out really not liking her, but as the show goes on I've started to like her more and more. When Sawyer saw Freckles I was torn. I think they should be together, but I couldn't help but feel bad for Juliette, who gets to be the runner up for both Jack and Sawyer's affections. At least she had three good years with Sawyer. What's so great about Kate anyway?

The statue was flippin' awesome!!

On Richard's eyeliner:

http://www.fashionencyclopedia.com/fashion_costume_culture/The-Ancient-World-Egypt/Kohl.html

Ancient egyptians, as a popular stylistic choice, painted black rings on the bottoms of their eyes. Richard is (apparently) immortal.

Can't be a coincidence.

The Armeniac said...

Those are his natural eyelashes! He's Persian. As an Armenian, and hence a cousin of the Persians, I can say that thick black eyeliner, or kohl, was and is a popular style through out the Near East.

PS: Glenn Frey's live version of Smugglers Blues from Del MAr in 1985 is blowing my f'n mind!!!

beckler said...

Now I remember why I think Lapidus is cute (note: I did not say fine). I remember falling asleep during Lawnmower Man back in the day, but I liked his blue eyes.

The creators of Lost have said that Horace's first wife will be featured prominently at some point.

DB said...

I forgot to mention that Juliette provided some of the best "Lost" cleavage in years in this episode. Bump it.

I can't really tell you why, but I don't really like Kate.

Matt Jacobson said...

Richard Alpert's initial's are R.A. = Ra, the Egyptian Sun God.

No coincidence.

Anonymous said...

I love a good 'what Egyptian God is it?' debate! Ra has a sun disk over his head in all depictions. The statue didn't have a disk o his head, he may be carrying an Ank, which lends some credence to Ra, but unless there was a disk on his head that got knocked off, dude probably ain't Ra. I like the initials idea though!

Matt Jacobson said...

http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Image:FourToedFull.jpg

It does appear to be a disc or crown of some sort, actually.

Ben Steinert said...

You'll notice too that Alpert's shirt in s3 e4 appears to be paisleys, but on closer inspection is ankhs. These are the same ankhs that appear when Locke visits the black lodge and confronts Bob. Also, Richard Alpert was the birth name of Baba Ram Dass. Drop that acid, you servant of god, you!

Matt Jacobson said...

If you look very clsoely at the lines under his eyes, they're not lines at all. It's very, very tiny writing that says "I am the egyptian sun-god Ra. Know my works and gaze upon me with adulation".

The Armeniac said...

Matt, I looked at the picture, and it's clearly a square shaped object on his head, not a disk. I also looked under Richard Alperts eyelids and it said " I am the Egyptian God of Fertility and Laughter Bes! A priest a rabbi and a mullah walk into a bar...." So buuuuurnn! I totaly rule dude!

Matt Jacobson said...

Richard Alpert always wears a black shirt. This is also a significant clue that he is Ra, because as the Egyptian Sun God, he absorbs all light.

Huh? I'm so full of it even I don't know what I'm saying anymore.
